Baxter’s Engineering Development Program (EDP) is a two-year engineering training program focused on developing high potential, entry-level engineering professionals. This program combines hands-on experiences and career mentoring with technical training classes to accelerate associates’ development. Associates will graduate with the confidence and technical ability to create Baxter’s next generation of products designed with the customer in mind.
Over the course of the program, associates develop their careers through three or four six- to nine-month rotations designed to challenge them to quickly adapt and add value to each position. These rotations provide an opportunity to experience a range of engineering roles such as designing and improving products and processes, reducing costs and improving quality, while also learning Baxter’s design methodologies such as Critical Thinking, Data Driven Design and New Product Introduction.

Cross-Functional Experience
Associates will learn to work closely with other functions to integrate product designs for manufacturability, reliability and serviceability, ultimately providing customers with optimal products.
Engineering Organizations
Associates are strategically aligned with Baxter’s Engineering organizations. Baxter’s Engineering organizations oversee the design and production of Baxter’s medical products including devices, disposables and containers. In this area, associates are typically involved in:
- Design Requirements Analysis– where they accurately identify and translate key customer design requirements into design principles and product/process characteristics.
- Product/Process Design and Testing – where they examine design options, systematically test various possibilities, effectively quantify tradeoffs between multiple options and offer alternative design solutions.
- Quality – where they use Data Driven Design methodologies and tools to find timely solutions to challenges in a systematic way while assessing the impact of solutions to the business team.
- Manufacturing – where they coordinate the design transfer from Design to Production, develop process to produce Baxter’s products, and lead programs that improve productivity, manufacturability, and cost of production.
Graduating from the EDP
As associates progress through each rotation, they continue to build and develop their skills, and enhance their overall knowledge of Baxter. Prior to completing the program, successful program associates typically begin planning their transition to a regular, full-time position within the company. As they do so, they will have access to a variety of resources to help with their transition, including the EDP program manager, business unit Human Resources managers, and past EDP supervisors and alumni.
Qualifications
- Has a bachelor of science and/or a master of science in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial or Biomedical Engineering;
- Has a record of academic excellence with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale);
- Possesses strong interpersonal skills and can adapt to and work well with diverse sets of situations and people;
- Has a passion for technology and strong technical skills; and
- Demonstrates behaviors consistent with Baxter’s short- and long-term business needs: initiative/drive, critical/analytical thinking, effective decision-making and relationship-building skills.
